Harry Styles plays a man struggling with being gay in "My Policeman"
My Policeman" is the film adaptation or interpretation of the novel "My Husband's Lover". The topics that are dealt with are wide-ranging. It is about eroticism, but also about a lot of heart.
Of course, "My Policeman" is not the first film to take up the topic of gay love. Among others, the hit movie Brokeback Mountain has already proven how strongly a romance between two men can be portrayed on the big screen. "My Policeman" is not set in the Wild West, however, but in Brighton, England. The setting is the 1950s - and thus a time when it was forbidden to be gay.
Harry Styles can be seen in one of the main roles. The Briton recently proved his acting qualities in "Don't worry Darling.
Harry Styles in "My Policeman" - what is it about?
In "My Policeman" Harry Styles plays a policeman who has decided to lead a double life. He marries a woman, but actually desires the curator of the museum, Patrick.
Accordingly, his marriage to his wife is only a "diversionary maneuver" to avoid having to come out. At first, his wife Marion has no idea that Tom (the name of Styles' role) is gay. The game of hide and seek seems to be perfect. However, the whole thing becomes particularly dramatic when it turns out that not only Tom, but also Marion herself develops feelings for Patrick.
The film contains some important messages, sad moments and the realization that one of the worst things in life is actually usually the missed opportunities.
"My Policeman" is now available on a well-known streaming service.
The film deals with several time levels
A very interesting aspect: The makers of the film have decided to let the action take place on several time levels. Thus, the young years of the three main characters are illuminated as well as their older selves.
And each character is and develops uniquely. The viewer gets deep insights into the emotional world of the different people and learns what thoughts are driving them. The plot invites the viewer to get involved and - quite incidentally - shows how the situation within the community in England has changed over the decades.
Harry Styles fans get their money's worth
Those who have already seen Harry Styles in "Don't worry Darling" will also be pleased to hear that he will probably continue to expand his acting career. In "My Policeman" he is seen not only very emotional, but also partly very sexy. For those responsible in the USA, however, the whole thing was probably too revealing. The film is only released for 17-year-olds there if they watch it in the company of an adult.
The FSK in Germany is not nearly as strict here. The minimum age here is 12.
However, it is definitely worth looking not only at Styles, but also at the other actors. Among others, "My Policeman" also features the gay David Dawson. And Rupert Everett, who played Julia Roberts' best friend in "My Best Friend's Wedding," is also in the cast. He, too, is gay in real life.
Accordingly, it must have been a kind of personal concern for some actors to take part in "My Policeman" because of their own sexual orientation. After all, this is not "just any story", but a plot based on a book that dealt with the scene early on.
