Numerous spectators in front of the screens

The Eurovision Song Contest is known to be an international spectacle in which the musical acts of the various European nationalities compete. In the end, the spectators and the juries of the individual participants determine their favorite.

This year, the ESC was held in Turin, because the winners of the previous year were from Italy.

Now that a few days have passed since the final, a look back is ventured. Because: The organizers have released a ratings analysis that provides revealing insights into the interest of the individual countries in the ESC. Among other things, this shows that more than 160 million people sat in front of their screens this year.
Although a lot of people are still interested in the music highlight, significantly fewer viewers tuned in this year than before, when it was well over 180 million people.

However, the statistics also contain a small error. This is because it was not possible to fully evaluate the data from all countries.

Eurovision Song Contest 2022

An ESC under special circumstances

The war of aggression waged by Russia against Ukraine also had an impact on the ESC 2022. It had long been clear that Russia would be excluded from participation. This also meant that a large audience market was lost. After all, many Russians have loved the ESC for a long time.

According to a report from NDR and a news item on the eurovision.de website, there were simply no measurements taken in many countries. For example, the values from countries such as Ukraine, Albania, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Montenegro and San Marino are missing.
This means that the audience share may actually be higher than the current data would lead us to believe. Accordingly, the exact figure remains open.

An impressive audience rating of 96.4 percent

While many viewers in this country are losing interest in the ESC, there are also numerous countries for which the annual Eurovision Song Contest is the TV highlight of the year. This seems to be the case in Iceland in particular, where a rating of 96.4 percent was achieved. More is almost impossible.

But the four-hour show is also being followed with enthusiasm in other countries - especially in large parts of Scandinavia. Here, ratings of between just under 90 and 70 percent were achieved.

In Germany, the show was watched by 36 percent, well over seven million people. The market share was particularly high among viewers aged 14 to 49. Here, more than 65 percent were reached.

Winners and losers of ESC 2022

As many had already suspected for a long time, the Kalush Orchestra was able to win this year's ESC with the entry "Stefania" from Ukraine. In last place was Malik Harris for Germany with his song "Rockstars". He was able to collect six points from the viewers. The jury score was zero.

The fact that Ukraine was able to win the ESC is not received positively by everyone. Many see it more as a political statement than as an assessment of musical ability. Others think it's good that the opportunity was taken to show solidarity for Ukraine.
However, one question remains: Traditionally, the Siegerland is supposed to host the ESC next. Will this be possible in 2023? According to reports, Great Britain, among others, has already declared its willingness to step in, if desired.
