Where exactly will the ESC 2023 take place?

This is a question that many ESC 2023 fans in particular are currently asking themselves. It has been clear for several weeks that the event cannot take place in the country of the previous year's winner (as is usually the case).

After all, there is a war going on here. The decision fell comparatively quickly on England. One question remains open, however: Where exactly? According to the BBC, there are several cities to choose from.

The fact that the choice basically fell on England is no coincidence. Those responsible in the country had brought up this option early on. AND: The English participant Sam Ryder took second place this year and was thus, among other things, also significantly more successful than the English entry in 2021. At that time, Germany was only "saved" from last place by Great Britain.

Where will the ESC 2023 take place

Seven English cities to be chosen

England is big. Accordingly, the question of where exactly the ESC 2023 will take place is quite obvious. According to the BBC, the cities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield are up for selection. London is apparently (surprisingly) not. Those who are already thinking about booking a hotel and a flight should be patient a little longer. After all, it will take until the fall before the city in which the title will be contested is finally announced.

Until then, many people in charge have to decide which place will best represent the ESC in England. However, just being in the top 7 is already a small success. After all, 20 cities had originally indicated that they would like to take part. So a kind of "pre-selection" has already been made.

With regard to the final selection should include details on:

  • The general capacities of the cities
  • the experience of holding larger events

will be taken into account. In the fall, the mystery of the ESC 2023 venue will then be solved.

England has experience in hosting the ESC

The younger ESC fans might not know it, but: England or Great Britain has hosted the ESC more often in the past than many might suspect.

In fact, the country has hosted the event a total of nine times (!). However, another statistic shows that the last ESC hosted by Great Britain took place 24 years ago. At that time, the city of Birmingham won the bid.

German fans might also have good (or at least funny) memories of the event. Because: At that time, none other than Guildo Horn entered the race with his "Guildo hat euch lieb" and made it to No. 7. 1st place went to the transsexual singer Dana International. At that time it was an impressive success for the queer scene, which was repeated a few years later by Conchita Wurst for Austria.

But one thing is already certain: the organizers' demands on themselves are very high. Because: Despite the fact that the ESC will be held in Great Britain, the "reflection of Ukrainian culture" is to be the focus. At the same time - according to the BBC - there will also be a representation of the "diversity of British music and creativity". ESC fans around the world can therefore be excited.
