What will the Berlin CSD 2022 be like?

Among other things, CSDs around the world have also suffered from the Corona pandemic in recent years. Many events took place online. Many activists also got on their bicycles to carry the demand for more equality into the world.

According to the statements of the organizers of the Berlin CSD 2022, the whole thing could already look different this year. If you keep in mind that in a few weeks there may be almost no more Corona rules, you can look in this context quite positive about the future. Of course, no one has a crystal ball and, as experience has shown, it is always possible that a new virus variant will throw a spanner in the works. But: Should everything(or a lot of things) become like before, the Berlin CSD e. V. is of the opinion that the CSD 2022 could become as big as the CSD 2019. The parade is planned for July 23.

The CSD 2022 in Berlin: Possibly one million visitors

In an interview with dpa, the organizers of CSD Berlin were optimistic. They expected as many visitors as in 2019, they say. The program is also to be again - in the truest sense of the word - colorful and diverse. Among other things, several stages and trucks are planned - as usual. The starting point has been placed in Leipziger Straße. The grand "finale" will then take place at the Brandenburg Gate.

The program consists of a mix of music and speeches around the issues that move the queer community (and all who can identify with it).

Is there still a mask requirement on the CSD date?

The organizers of the CSD Berlin go so far that they believe that in the summer of 2022 also the last Corona rule, the mask obligation, will fall. One would like to go however apparently also on the safe side. Therefore a hygiene concept was compiled. If this becomes necessary, a plan B is accordingly still in the starting blocks. So far, the organizers and the police expect half a million people. But: According to experience and also with regard to the past years one knows that this number can rise clearly. Accordingly, the organizers consider the already mentioned 1 million mark realistic. Already in 2021, a little familiar "CSD atmosphere" was to be sniffed. Because: After the event in 2020 had taken place exclusively on the Internet, in 2021 already about 70,000 people demonstrated on the streets of Berlin.

Not everyone is so optimistic...

As pleasing as it sounds that the community in Berlin could perhaps celebrate a "completely normal" CSD again in the summer of 2022, it should be mentioned at this point that not everyone is as positive as the organizers of the event.

One of the reasons for this is that omicron is considered to be much more contagious than delta. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that people are more likely to catch the disease in the open air. It remains to be seen exactly how the whole thing will develop. However, it is also certain that many people would rather celebrate the CSD with a mask and an adapted hygiene concept than not at all. After all, it is important to continue to carry the important message to the outside, even in difficult times.
