The AfD chalks it all up to "gender madness."

Sven Lehmann becomes new Queer Officer

Sven Lehmann (Greens) will be the new Queer Commissioner of the Federal Government and will be responsible for the acceptance of sexual and gender diversity.
Many people associate the traffic light coalition with a kind of "upswing" - also with regard to the queer community. One item that is comparatively high on the "wish list" is acceptance or more tolerance in connection with sexual and gender diversity in Germany.
The government is currently showing increased openness to this issue and in this context recently appointed the first commissioner for acceptance of sexual and gender diversity. The choice fell on Sven Lehmann from the Green Party. However, there is also headwind and criticism regarding this post, especially from the AfD.

Praise and congratulations from the federal government

Sven Lehmann feels very honored due to his appointment and now wants to clearly represent the rights of the LGBTQI+ community in the Bundestag. The office was only newly introduced and accordingly it should be all the more exciting what impact this post will have on queer rights and developments.
Many politicians and queer-friendly organizations are also very pleased that a separate office has now been created for this area. After all, there is not only a lot of potential associated with this, but also an important message. Through this action, the federal government is underlining how important it is to it to set a focus here - perhaps more so than in the past.
However, this does not seem to be to everyone's liking. There have already been critical voices, especially from the AfD.

Criticism and scorn - especially from the AfD

Not everyone agrees with the current developments surrounding the new post. In most cases, this is not about criticizing Lehmann himself, but rather about the fact that there is a queer commissioner at all.
The AfD in particular expressed outrage, calling the appointment "[...] a new sad high point of #Green gender madness." Co-vice party leader Beatrix von Storch sees in the new commissioner someone who is striving for a "progressive" family policy, although tens of thousands would oppose it.
At the same time, Sven Lehmann is seen as an active opponent whose plans must be fought. Thus the party had resolved to want to fight Lehmann's national plan "with all determination". What exactly is planned here in detail does not seem to be certain yet. What is certain is that Lehmann will certainly have to prepare himself for some hurdles.

Some in the AfD are also not really sure whether it is necessary to introduce such an office at all. Norbert Kleinwächter(vice faction leader of the AfD) commented ironically on Twitter in this regard: "The #Ampelkoalition takes care of the real problems in the country.".
To what extent, the office will lead to successes or discussions at different levels, only time can tell. A look at the comments under the post of Sven Lehmann himself, however, shows that many people have high expectations of this office. As motivated as Lehmann seems, he should have no problem devoting himself to his task with a healthy dose of heart and soul - and even weathering the odd storm of discussion.

One response to "Sven Lehmann becomes new queer commissioner"

  1. Lets hope that the tolerance towards a minority will increase.
Simply conveying human values that are free of religion would probably be important.
