European Parliament advocates for more comprehensive protections for queers

A resolution was passed in the Council of Europe. This is of particular importance for the scene, among others, because on its basis the protection of the community is to be further expanded.

More and more hate crimes against queers show that it is time to act. Just recently, the double murder of two people in Slovakia shocked in this context. The perpetrator killed himself after shooting two men.

More protection for queers in the EU

The resolution and an impressive majority

A total of 447 MEPs voted in favor of the resolution, which aims to further expand the protection of queer people. 78 MEPs voted against, 45 abstained. Many of the "against" votes came from MEPs from Poland and Hungary. But also some Italians did not agree with the innovations.

Voices are already being raised in this context calling for this development to be taken seriously. Many people find it very worrying that some members of parliament do not want to prevent hate crimes, such as those that have occurred in Slovakia, through stricter laws and the like. The demands of the resolution's supporters are clear: a stronger fight against hate speech and more education in society.

Among other things, the connections of many hate criminals to the far-right scene are also repeatedly emphasized in this context.

Slovakia itself is also criticized

The situation for people belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community in Slovakia is worrying ... and not only since the shocking double murder that happened here recently. Time and again, human rights are and have been violated and misinformation spread here.

Many activists, community members and politicians have been calling for queer rights to be further developed in Slovakia for some time.

For the sake of completeness, however, it should be mentioned that Slovakia is not the only country where there is still "room for improvement" with regard to more tolerance and equal rights. Within the EU, there are many states where same-sex couples are still not accepted.

Slovakia: Music festival becomes a kind of memorial event

The decision of the EU Parliament to further strengthen the rights of queers and to stand even more against right-wing extremist or homophobic movements shows that many changes are currently taking place within society.

To underline that the two victims of the double murder in Slovakia will by no means be forgotten, the organizers of a well-known music festival in Slovakia have already announced that they will dedicate the event, which will be held in November 2022, to the two gay murdered men.

This is definitely not "any" event, but rather a complete series in which about 70 artists will participate. The whole thing will take place in more than 40 places in the country.

What is the situation of queers in the EU?

It is simply not possible to give a standardized answer to this question. Even in countries where society is largely open about its community, there are still incidents that show that there is still a long way to go before complete equality is achieved.

In the meantime, however, more and more voices are being raised in many countries, similar to those in the EU Parliament, calling for tougher action to be taken against hate crimes of various kinds. In some countries, judicial officers are also trained in particular to react correctly in the relevant situations and to provide victims with the right psychological support.
