Survey shows: gay kisses do not go down well with everyone

How queer-friendly or queer-hostile are the Germans? Questions like these are answered in regular surveys, among other things. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation has now looked into the question of how heterosexuals view gay kisses.

Just about everything was represented here, from tolerant to frightening answers. However, the survey also showed that many people obviously still have a problem with two people of the same sex showing their love to each other.

However, there is one positive message: The development is encouraging! The answers to the questions tended to be less homophobic than they were a few years ago.

Gay kisses are unpopular

Approximately 1/10 of German population finds gay kissing "disgusting"

Perhaps the most startling finding of the entire survey: the statement "It's disgusting when homosexuals kiss in public. "five percent of respondents said yes, and four percent rated the opinion as "somewhat true.

The good news: 60 percent "stronglydisagreed" with this assertion. Regardless, however, the survey also shows why many queer people are afraid of gay kissing or "just" holding hands in public, for example.

Some attacks on homosexual couples in the past show that the fear of the reactions of others is unfortunately not always unfounded here.

How have attitudes toward queer couples changed over time?

Studies and surveys such as those conducted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation naturally become all the more meaningful when they are compared with the results of previous years. Fortunately, it can be seen here that society seems to be less homophobic nowadays than it was some time ago.

Within the last two years - also according to said results - not only prejudices against queers but also prejudices against people from other countries etc. could be reduced.

However, the opposite direction can be seen with regard to the issue of anti-Semitism. According to current studies, hostility toward Jews is on the rise again.

One aspect that stands out with regard to surveys of this kind is, among other things, the fact that the multiple choice options also offer room for personal reflection. Anyone who is not yet sure where they stand on a particular statement can make this clear with their answer. Whether or not a decision will be made "at some point in the future" depends on various factors, including the opinion of the respondent's immediate environment.

Politics and its protagonists also seem to have a major influence on people's attitudes. For example, those who vote for largely tolerant and open parties tend to be more tolerant as well.

Does the survey give us hope? What conclusions can be drawn for the future?

Many people are skeptical about the current survey results around gay kisses. No wonder! Anyone who follows the studies on this topic a little more closely knows that the trend - both in one direction and the other - can change.

Here, not only personal tastes and attitudes towards love play an important role, but also political events, happenings in the field of public life, and so on. Social networks should also not be underestimated in this context. Relevant groups certainly have the opportunity here to shape opinion in one direction or another.

That the current poll results seem to be less homophobic than they were about two years ago is a good sign - but not a reason to rest.
