It would have been an important step towards "more equality",... Even if it is "only" a PC game. But: in Russia queer sims are not allowed to marry. The expansion of the game is not offered here. Another detail that once again shows how hard it is made for the community in the country.

What is behind the Sims expansion?

It's not new that there are now many game manufacturers that focus on queer characters, among other things. Now the makers of The Sims are following suit. Here, an expansion is to be offered that has managed to make waves even before its release. Finally, same-sex Sims are to be able to marry in the game. What might only elicit a bored "So what?", is a real milestone for others - especially for many members of the community. Because: The expansion means another step towards more tolerance, more equality and more visibility.

But the ad-on is not available in every country. Now Russia has objected. The reason: Here they don't want "Cam" and "Dom", two women, to get married. The Russian player audience will thus not come into contact with this option at all.

Two lesbian Sims getting married - what's so exciting about this?

A lot. At least if you dare to take a look behind the special message of this game expansion. Because: By allowing Cam and Dom to marry, the topic is - fortunately - treated a bitmore"normally" again. Even people who haven't dealt with the topic in the past - simply because it doesn't affect them - now come into contact with this important detail around more equality.

Especially in Russia, it would certainly have been beneficial to be able to rely on this kind of proof of tolerance. However, it's not really surprising that the expansion is banned here. After all, there are generally stricter rules regarding the game here. Since homosexuality plays or can play a role in "The Sims", the game is only released for adults. By way of comparison, games that are only allowed to be sold to adult players in Germany(and in many other countries around the world) often come from the category of the so often cited "baller games".

The Sims - one of many games in which queerness is represented

Even if The Sims is considered by many to be particularly progressive in terms of queerness and the like, it is by no means the only gaming series that does not exclusively feature cis characters. Many gaming fans have even taken it upon themselves to specifically search for queer characters.

Some of the most famous examples come from the games "Overwatch", "Street Fighter" and "Dragon Age Inquisition". Meanwhile, rumors are even doing the rounds that ALL characters from Super Mario are queer. Whether this assumption is accurate or not remains to be seen. In any case, it is fun to deal with the individual fan theories - as imaginative as they may sometimes be.

However, the idea that the additional Sims content will also be unlocked in Russia at some point is probably comparatively unrealistic. Nevertheless, the PC world remains colorful in other countries of the world. Maybe a small part of this fascination will eventually spill over to the Russian audience?
