Rainbow Six Siege gets a transsexual character

Rainbow Six Siege has enjoyed a special popularity for a long time. In multiplayer mode, you can save the world - to put it simply. The challenges in the different levels are always new and the choice of characters will also change in the future. With the character Osa, players will have the opportunity to choose a transsexual character in the future.

The developers at Ubisoft have also reacted in the meantime and confirmed, among other things, that Osa's queerness will be referenced within the game.

It was to be expected that this would go down well with some gamers and not so well with others. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how the gaming industry seems to be becoming more and more open in terms of gender identities.

Transsexuality is explicitly emphasized

Interestingly, Osa is a figure that you would not actually see her transsexuality. Blonde hair, side parting, cool glasses - probably only a few would have thought that this female figure could have once been a man.

In order to find this information, it is necessary to delve a bit deeper into the Rainbow Six material. However, in the description of the character you'll find the relevant details. It says that Osa was isolated during her time at the university - due to her transition. With this detail, it is expressed that Osa has done various things (this is not elaborated on) in the past to express her gender identity. Whether she merely changed her name or has already undergone surgery is left open.

If you want to play Rainbow Six Siege with Osa, you have the possibility to do so since a few days. It is important that the corresponding update is downloaded.

Osa is not the first queer video game character

If you know your way around the world of video games and look around a bit, you'll quickly realize that Osa isn't the first video game character to be queer. Over time, there have been many characters that have made a name for themselves with respect to their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Particularly well-known examples in this context are Lena Tracer Oxton from "Overwatch", Poison from "Street Fighter" and Ellie from "The Last of us". However, there are also some characters for whom the net community is still not sure whether they belong to the LGBTQ community. A particularly illustrious example of this is Birdo from the Super Mario series. Here, the fan world puzzled over and over again whether the creature could be male, female or diverse.

Mixed reactions to Osa

Shortly after it was announced that Osa, a queer character, would see the light of day in the gaming world, the first positive and negative reactions followed.

One of the things that was particularly shocking in this context was that it was often not about making constructive criticism here, but about inciting against queers. It was no longer about the fact that Rainbox Six Siege can now be played with a new character, but about speaking out against the LGBTQ community in general.

Some complained that such "additional information" would not only fit the game's plot and was therefore out of place. For the sake of completeness, however, it should be mentioned that there were, of course, also many players who were pleased that Ubisoft is now breaking new ground with regard to the popular game. And who knows what exciting adventures Osa will experience in the virtual world and whether she might not remain the only queer character in the game?
