Cher has become a truegay icon. Many of her fans are active in the LGBTQ scene and have certainly celebrated the artist's birthday on May 20 - at least in their minds - a little bit.
The illustrious history of the pop icon began early in the mid-1960s. Since then, it is impossible to imagine the music scene without her.
But it was not only with her music that she made headlines. Among other things, she was also repeatedly in the media because of her numerous plastic surgeries and the transsexuality of her daughter, who has identified as a man for several years.
One thing is certain: Cher's life has been shaped by numerous influences. That she definitely does not belong to the "old iron" (and will never belong to this), she recently proved with her guest appearance in the latest Pink video.
Who is Cher, anyway? - A look back at an exciting life
Cher began her musical career early. Together with the roustabout and her later husband Salvatore Bono came the hippie hit "I Got You Babe". "Sonny and Cher" thrilled the masses from the beginning. The song hit like a bomb and climbed the European charts. A real evergreen, which still conveys the attitude to life of that time.
Unfortunately, the life of the two backstage was far from harmonious. The marriage was divorced in 1974, among other things because Bono was violent again and again. The marriage produced their daughter Chastity Bono. She lives on after a gender adjustment as Chaz Bono.
The second marriage with the musician Greg Allman was not under a good star from the beginning. Only nine days after the "yes" word Cher wanted to annul the marriage again. After all, the whole thing lasted from 1975 to 1979. Greg and Cher produced an album together and have a son together, Elijah Blue. He also became a musician.
After the divorce, Cher decided that she didn't want to commit herself anymore, but just to have fun. The list of her male companions includes many prominent names such as Warren Beatty, Eric Clapton, David Geffen, Richie Sambora and Tom Cruise.

A slap in the face for the then 17-year-old Chastity! Over time, the two became closer again and her daughter's sexual orientation no longer bothered her. Possibly, the situation inspired her even more to stand up for gay rights.

Cher is one of those artists who are called "diva". Nevertheless, she always gives the impression that she doesn't take herself too seriously and likes to try out new things. Hardly any other artist has managed to reinvent herself so often over the years... And every now and then to shock with her outfits. She has been parodied in countless queer shows and has always been considered a confident artist who stands up for those who bravely stand up for themselves.
