Superman's son, Jon Kent, is to become bisexual - and the community rejoices

A few days ago, the news spread like wildfire: Superman's son, Jon Kent, is supposed to become or be bisexual. In the new comic he is supposed to fall in love with Jay Nakamura, a journalist.

A look at the social networks quickly showed that a large part of the community has apparently been waiting for a sexual confession like this. While Superman was seen by many as the epitome of masculinity and the seducer of women, his son is now a bisexual character who is likely to quickly take fans' hearts by storm.

For classification: who is Jon Kent actually?

For those who don't know Jon Kent (yet): Jon is the son of Lois Lane and Clark Kent (Superman). He first played a role in the comic "Convergence: Superman #2" before he became - who would have thought it - Superboy. He now got his first starring role in "Superman: Son of Kal-El".

And that's exactly where it will eventually happen: Superboy aka Jon Kent will find out that he not only likes women, but also men. His dream man is also no stranger. Those who follow the comics regularly already know him: Jay Nakamura. The sympathy definitely seems to be mutual here, because: both will kiss in the course of the story.

The target audience for comics could expand in the future - at the very least, it could be shown that it's entirely possible to weave queer superheroes into exciting stories.

How did the news of the bisexual superhero son go down?

Admittedly, not everyone was thrilled when they heard that Jon Kent was to become bisexual. There were also a few critical voices who said that it was simply "normal" for a superhero to be straight, along the lines of "It's always been that way!

Within the scene, however, the news was received very positively. Most people here are grateful for this form of visibility and for the fact that another sexual orientation is considered in the course of one of the most famous comics ever.

It has long been known that more and more video games are moving in this direction. World of Warcraft, for example, has also seen similar developments, showing that heroes of all kinds do not necessarily have to conform to the cis norm.

What role do queers play in comics?

In addition to Superman, there are now other comic series in which the topic of queerness is openly addressed. One of the most famous outings in the comic scene came from Robin, Batman's friend. He also declared some time ago that he was bisexual.

Perhaps the creators of Superman felt motivated to promote more diversity in their comics? Either way, the DC Universe is likely to be enriched by a happy couple, and readers will be pleased.

However, the bisexual Jon Kent is unlikely to be the last character to shake up the world of action and superheroes. And a look back also shows that in the past - especially in connection with comics - there has always been speculation about the sexual orientation of the various characters. One of the best-known examples in this context is Scar from "The Lion King." Time and again there was talk that he might be gay because of his behavior. And Le Fou (from "Beauty and the Beast") also harbored more than just friendly feelings for his garçon, after all.
