The best queer movies for fall

For many, snuggling up on the couch on a rainy autumn afternoon, forgetting about the outside world and watching a queer movie together with your sweetheart represents the maximum relaxation.

There is definitely no shortage of supply at the moment. Especially the area of queer films has experienced a real revival. But which films are particularly worthwhile? Which plot is convincing? And which film creates the basis for a mix of drama, action and love?

The following inspirations can help. (The order of the listed tips does not represent a rating, but is chosen purely at random).

Tip No. 1: I am Samuel

I am Samuel

"I am Samuel" tells the story of a gay man living in Africa. He and his partner suffer from the fact that homosexuality is still considered a crime in Kenya. Anyone who is "caught" must expect a prison sentence of several years.

But not only the law seems to speak against Samuel and his great love. His own family also turns away from him when they learn that he is gay.

Giving up, however, is out of the question for Samuel and his friend.

Tip No. 2: Ammonite

Tip No. 2: Ammonite

If you're in the mood for a mix of an exciting plot and thought-provoking elements, you'll get your money's worth with "Ammonite". Among others, none other than Kate Winslet is at the start here. In her role as Mary Anning, she falls in love with Charlotte Murchison, who is played by Saoirse Ronan. The film takes the audience back to the 1840s in England.

What is special is that many scenes of the film get by without elaborate dialogues. Instead, it is enough to let the images take effect.

Tip No. 3: Transformistas

Tip No. 3: Transformistas

The film or documentary "Transformistas" is all about the transgender community in Cuba. Since this is a low budget production, which was mostly shot with smartphones, a special atmosphere is created.

The filming location is one of the most famous queer bars in all of Cuba. Here, the transformistas, the people who gave the film its name, stand up for their rights.

Without rose-colored glasses and instead with a healthy portion of realism, the strip shows the challenges transsexual people in Cuba have to deal with. At the same time, the plot is encouraging in that it shows that those affected are not discouraged and keep standing up for what is important to them - despite all setbacks.

Tip No. 4: Under my skin

Tip No. 4: Under my skin

"Under my skin" is autobiographical in tone and based on the experiences of director David O'Donnell. The plot deals with a relationship that could not be more different. On the one hand: the open, creative and a little freaked out Denny and on the other hand Ryan, who works as a lawyer and whose views on life are not compatible with those of his partner in many areas.

However, the strip also proves impressively that it doesn't always take the same opinion on different topics to find common ground.

Tip No. 5: The Boys in the Band

Tip No. 5: The Boys in the Band

If you're in the mood to see "Dr. Dr. Sheldon Cooper" in a different role, "The Boys in the Band" is a good choice. The plot? A group of gay friends get together as part of a birthday party. They all have to deal with a wide variety of problems in their everyday lives. It is about acceptance, outings, reactions to the same and about the way to oneself. From happy to thoughtful and sad moments, everything is represented here.

Due to the broad range of topics, certainly also because of the prominent cast, "The Boys in the Band" also enjoyed particular popularity with the "straight" audience.
