In a few weeks, the time will finally come: in Switzerland, the vote on marriage for all is coming up. One aspect that could possibly play an important role in this context is that various musicians have now joined forces to write a song on the subject.

Their goal: to get as many people as possible to vote "yes" so that queer couples can marry in Switzerland. "Just" one of many actions? Maybe. Nevertheless, the potential impact of the action should not be underestimated. Because: the song relies not only on prominent participation, but also on a somewhat unconventional approach. However, it could reach the (still) undecided more than, for example, flyers.

The song for marriage for all

Who is behind "Yes, I do"?

"Yes, I do" is the product of several Swiss artists who have made it their goal to support the queer community in Switzerland. Among others, Dabu Fantastic and Adrian Stern were part of the party.

The song emphasizes the importance of celebrating every kind of love and that it is important that every person has the right to marry.

However, a special focus of the song is not "only" on love and equality, but on diversity in general Therefore, the song "Marriage for All" was written in several languages. This is not only about making sure that every Swiss person understands the lyrics, but also about proving that people from different regions of the country are willing to support the community in this important cause.

The song for "marriage for all

"Yes, I do" is not yet available

The fact that there is a song that could influence the vote around marriage for all in Switzerland has already made high waves in the media. But: so far, the work has not even been released! It will only be available in mid-August for anyone who wants to download it.

Therefore, it remains to be seen a bit how the musical call for versatility and tolerance will sound. Especially because of the different influences and the different languages, the probability is high that a special statement will be made here.

After the release, the song has in any case the possibility to still work a little in the auditory canals. After all, the final vote will not take place until September 26, 2021.

The fact that it has come to a vote at all has a special reason. Actually, both chambers of the country's parliament were in agreement. They had already decided last year that marriage should be opened up accordingly.

However, some conservative groups did not agree with this decision. Shortly thereafter, they launched a referendum, which will result in the aforementioned vote in September. The outcome of the referendum is still completely open.

LGBTQ in Switzerland

Even if the objections of some groups showed how strong the resistance against the opening of marriage is in some areas in Switzerland, it cannot be denied that the scene within the country has developed significantly over time. Especially in the larger cities, such as Bern or Zurich, homosexual life takes place in public to the greatest extent possible. Gay couples strolling through the streets holding hands are usually not given much attention here.

The positive developments are also clearly evident in the area of culture, among other things. For example, there are several film festivals in Switzerland that focus exclusively on queer topics. In addition, Zurich's gay scene in particular is well-known beyond the city and national borders. The offerings around gay bars, gay cinemas, etc. have also been expanded over time.

And yet: the opening for marriage for all would be a very special sign even in the often tolerant Switzerland.

By the way, in September the Queer Film Festival starts.
