The LGBTQ community is also growing in Bucharest. Meanwhile, CSDs are also celebrated here. At this year's event, however, more people came than were actually allowed (due to the applicable Corona requirements).

The consequence: those responsible will now be fined. This amounts to just over 1,400 euros.

The CSD 2021 and its counter protests

As part of the CSD 2021 in Bucharest, many people came to the streets of the city. However, not all of them were concerned with speaking out for more tolerance and for the rights of queers. Among other things, there were also counter-demonstrations that promoted "more normality". Among others, according to the news portal g4media.ro, the supporters of a national, radical right-wing party were behind these.

The extent to which they were bothered by the community became apparent from many signs and statements.

It became much more colorful a few hours later, when the actual Pride started. Here were also far more people represented. But exactly this became a problem in retrospect.

Allowed number of participants of the Pride in Bucharest was exceeded

Originally, only 500 people were allowed to participate in the Pride in Bucharest. However, since there were significantly more queers and queer supporters on site, a fine has now been imposed on the organizers. This amounts to a little more than 1,400 euros.

How many people were actually on the streets of Bucharest last Saturday as part of the CSD can only be estimated. In the regional media, there is talk of about 4,000 demonstrators.

However, the anger about the fine could be limited for the organizers, among other things due to the fact that the community has received a support through the high number of participants, which - especially in Bucharest - was not always a matter of course.

Nevertheless, the Corona Pandemic ensures that a small downer remains in the form of the fine.

The CSD in Bucharest has consequences

Queers in Bucharest - a sensitive issue

Until a few years ago, many LGBTQs still suffered from discrimination and exclusion, especially in Bucharest. Until the early 2000s, for example, it was forbidden to be queer there. Those affected were therefore forced to live their love for their partner in secret.

In the meantime, this has changed quite a bit. However, even though same-sex love is now officially permitted in Lang, people are not allowed to marry each other. Also partnering, as known from other countries, is not possible here.

However, there is a good chance that something could change in this regard. The EU has repeatedly called for more tolerance towards queers in Romania. It remains to be seen whether those responsible on the ground - above all the government - will give in in the future.

CSDs and Corona - an issue not only in Bucharest

How great the desire for more equality is in the most diverse countries of the world is shown by the high numbers of participants in the CSDs. Unfortunately, these speak - at least currently - against the Corona situation. Also in Germany was sometimes criticized that in the context of CSDs thousands of participants meet on the streets - partly without masks and without safety distance.

An alternative, which already enjoyed great popularity last year, were or are the bicycle demonstrations, which will again play a greater role in 2021. Many organizers meanwhile also move their activities to the Internet and thus offer interested parties the opportunity to inform themselves completely contactless about current interim statuses, developments and demands before the Christopher Street Days can perhaps take place again next year in the usual form...!
