Outing in the sports world: professional swimmer Daniel Jervis is gay

In the sports world, which in many areas is still seen as a strong male domain, many gay or queer athletes are still afraid to come out publicly about their sexuality. Numerous people fear that coming out to themselves could bring an abrupt end to their careers.

Despite concerns of this kind, there are now more and more active professional athletes who are now openly admitting their sexuality. To coincide with last Pride Month, the British star swimmer Daniel Jervis came out as homosexual. He became aware of his sexual orientation when he took a closer look at himself.

So the queer community has another member who shows that coming out in sports doesn't have to mean the end of your profile career.

Daniel Jervis has come out

"I think I've always known."

For his native Wales, the successful swimmer has won the silver medal in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This year he is taking part in the competition for the third time. During an interview with the British BBC, he has now publicly come out as gay.

However, all this did not come completely out of the blue. The professional swimmer, for example, has never made a secret of his bisexuality. He also loved his former partners, as he says himself. Nevertheless, there was always something in the back of his mind that he had to deal with at some point.

After thinking for a long time that he was bisexual, he now realized that he is homosexual after all and that he only likes men. His public outing is part of a longer process and was by no means spontaneous. The athlete claims to have been aware of his homosexuality for about two years. However, before informing the media, he spoke with his loved ones.

Daniel Jervis admits to hating himself

In the aforementioned interview, the star swimmer also addresses another important topic that many men who are not (yet) outed have to deal with: their own self-hatred.
Daniel Jervis also admits that he hated himself for a long time before his outing. With his outing and the open contact in his close social circle, however, he was able to counteract this hatred.

At the same time, however, he is aware that not everyone succeeds in taking precisely this step, overcoming self-hatred. That's why he also addresses a particularly sad topic in his interview: the fact that many people who would actually like to come out, but can't, take their own lives.

Let's hope that many people who are not in the public eye will now also be encouraged to come out. The feedback on Jervis' outing was positive in any case. Several fans wrote, including publicly in the social networks, of course to continue to stand by the successful swimmer and emphasized how important the step had been for the community.

Publicly outed queer athletes are becoming more

Outings of people who are in the public eye are enormously important, because in a certain way a kind of "role model function" is served here.

However, Daniel Jervis is not the first active professional who decided to come out. Before him, many other people decided to take this important step. In the vast majority of cases, it has not harmed their careers.

And in the end, that's probably exactly how to explain why more and more queer athletes are coming out to themselves. However, everyone should be clear about one thing: The "dark figure" of homosexual celebrities from the most diverse areas is probably high.
