On Friday it was that time again: The Teddy Awards were presented in Berlin. By now already for the 36th time. The film Três tigres tristes managed to secure the coveted prize in the category "Best Feature Film".

Among others, prizes also went to two documentaries. The makers of "Alis" and "Nelly & Nadine" had reason to rejoice.

Main prize goes to Brazil for "Três tigres tristes

The film "Três tigres tristes" is known in English as "Three Tidy Tigers Tied a Tie Tighter". It is about the community, being queer and family relationships. The drama around the scene was penned by Gustavo Vinagre.

The film is about three queer characters who live in a pandemic and are confronted with the most diverse challenges. Among other things, it is about classic problems, but also above all about self-realization and the courage to stand by oneself. And even though this is a drama, the focus is also always on the joy of life and happiness, among other things. A great message that will certainly be well received by younger queers.

A look at the other award winners

Among others, the documentary "Alis" was also awarded a prize. This is about ten women who live in a home and are asked to introduce themselves to a friend ("Alis"). The former street children talk about their dreams, their past and how they imagine their future. Since the film works with a total of ten characters, the viewer gains a wide variety of insights. Especially the way about the imaginary friend, is new and additionally captivates.

The makers behind "Nelly & Nadine" also had reason to celebrate. This is about two women who fall in love with each other in a concentration camp. It's about not giving up, standing by yourself and being brave. The audience is taken on an interesting (and sometimes very touching) journey through time.

What's behind the Teddy Awards?

The Teddy Awards are part of the Berlin Film Festival and have long enjoyed a special tradition. For 36 years now, the community, among others, has looked to the event to honor queer works time and again and to support visibility around important issues.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to celebrate the event in the usual way in 2022. Due to Corona, only a few guests were invited. Larger celebrations around the event also had to be cancelled. Nevertheless, many media report around an event that definitely represents much more than "just" a supporting program of the Berlin Film Festival.

The awards have been presented since 1987 and the prize is the oldest and most important queer film award in the world. The award winners are people whose work promotes social diversity and in this way supports the desire for more tolerance and equality.

Among other things, it is certainly thanks to the Teddy Awards that the international community has become increasingly aware of the topic of diversity. Due to the internationality of the Teddy Awards, it is also possible to compare the different situations of the community in the various countries. It's a great way to think outside the box, from which everyone can ultimately benefit.
