Slovenia also finally legalizes marriage for all

The LGBTQIA+ community can claim a very special success! In Slovenia, a law related to marriage and adoption rights was amended. A total of 48 members of parliament voted to introduce marriage for all. But that's not all! In addition, same-sex couples are allowed to adopt a child.

Only 29 deputies voted against the amendment. One deputy abstained completely. The result shows that a large part of the people in Slovenia are now also prepared to integrate the queer community and its needs even better into society. Nevertheless, the Constitutional Court's ruling divides the nation into different camps. Some are celebrating and rejoicing over the change in the law, while others have been demonstrating against the draft law until the very end.

Slovenia legalizes marriage for all

Marriage for all is legal in Slovenia - How did the ruling come about?

Just a few weeks after the Constitutional Court debated the bill, the right-wing conservative government was replaced by a liberal state government. The actual debate was triggered by two same-sex couples who filed a lawsuit. They wanted to defend themselves against the fact that they were not allowed to marry or adopt children. And that's exactly what got the ball rolling.

In July, the Constitutional Court deliberated and decided, with six votes in favor and three against, that marriage for all should be legalized in Slovenia. The law in force until then was deemed unconstitutional.

At the same time, the Constitutional Court is certain that the significance of traditional marriage between a man and a woman will not be jeopardized by the amendment. In the context of the amendments, it was once again made clear that the innovation only offers same-sex couples the opportunity to marry and start a family. However, the customary rights of heterosexual couples will not be jeopardized.

Many people who were against the law took to the streets. Nevertheless, the new law was waved through and now offers many people the opportunity to start a completely new life with new rights.

Slovenia now has a special role in the Eastern European area

With the legalization of marriage for all and adoption rights for same-sex couples, Slovenia is considered the first country in the Eastern European area to grant homosexual people the same rights as heterosexual people.

Since 2006, same-sex couples in Slovenia have been able to register their partnership. Now marriage for all is also possible. However, a look beyond Slovenia's borders shows that the country plays a special role, especially in the Eastern European regions. Here, the registration of civil partnerships is often "difficult" or impossible. Marriage for all is certainly not on the cards - at least not in the near future.

Many Eastern European countries even enact laws that are directed against homosexual people. Above all, queer content in everyday school life or in school lessons becomes a contentious issue here time and again.

Due to the restrictions, people living in these countries are often forced to live out their sexual orientation - if at all - only in private.

But who knows? Perhaps Slovenia's courage will be rewarded and the country will be seen as a model for other countries in Eastern Europe. To assume here that the changes in question will come about "overnight" would certainly be naive. However, the example surrounding marriage for all in Slovenia has shown that hope should never be given up.
