Who was Olympia Dukakis?

Olympia Dukakis was probably what you would call a "typical character actress". She was known and loved, among other things, for her raspy but all the more endearing voice. Where other actors and actresses might still strive to sound as harmonious as possible, Dukakis was associated with one thing above all: authenticity.

She enriched works like "Kuck mal, wer da spricht" and "Mondsüchtig" in her very own way and stood in front of the camera with greats like Cher during her career.

She didn't seem to think about "retiring". In 2019, she took part in "Tales of the City" and did not have to hide from her young colleagues.

She built a special bridge to the LGBTQ community through her participation in the film "Jeffrey". In a way, this represented a turning point, as it managed to approach the topics of "HIV" and "AIDS" in a way that had never been done before. It was by no means a matter of making fun of people and their fate. Rather, the goal was not to lose the laughter even in difficult times.

A woman who was believed in her roles

No matter what roles Olympia Dukakis embodied, the audience believed her. Alongside another queer icon, Cher, she showed how impressive life experience can be. With her characters, she showed that it's also okay to be in a bad mood, to stand by oneself and to appear self-confident.

One aspect that never fell short in this context: Dukakis' profundity. No matter how unapproachable her roles may have seemed in some situations, one always liked her - if only because she retained her very own view of the world and allowed the audience to share in it.

The different facets of the actress appreciated not only the audience, but also her colleagues. Shortly after the death of the artist was reported, Cher also already spoke out via social networks.

"Olympia Was A Great Artist & Brought Immense Joy To Anyone Who Was Lucky Enough To See Her Work her MAGIC. Ppl Around The World Will Miss her." she declared in a tweet that has now received more than 8,000 likes.

An eventful life and old age

Certainly, it is not an exaggeration to say that Olympia Dukakis was one of the actresses who managed to live her dream. She was born in Massachusetts in the 1930s to Greek parents. After her first studies in Boston, in connection with which se devoted herself to physical therapy, she attended university again to study theater.

After that, she managed to land roles comparatively quickly - first on stage, then in film. The community will certainly remember her as a woman who never gave up, always believed in herself, and thus became not only an icon but also an individual role model.
