A new documentary is to take a closer look at the Mr. Gay Germany election

Every year, the Mr. Gay Germany election manages to inspire more and more people - even outside the community. No wonder! After all, this is a very special beauty contest that shows that elections of this kind are not or should not be limited to cis people.

The history of the classic Miss elections now goes back more than a hundred years. Nevertheless, a lot has changed here. Among other things, nowadays it's no longer "just" about appearances, but also about important character traits and the social commitment that the participants can demonstrate.

After the first Miss elections enjoyed particular popularity, Mister elections were also created over time. These followed the same principle.

Since 2008, Germany has also been looking for its "Mr. Gay Germany".

Not only many people from the community were increasingly bothered by the fact that the participants and contestants of the classic beauty contests primarily conformed to the prevailing cis norms. Exactly that was to change in 2008. With the Mr. Gay Germany a special statement was made. Numerous interesting and attractive men now had the opportunity to make the world of beauty contests a little more colorful and diverse.

Many winners of the elections used their titles and the attention they brought them to raise community visibility and address important issues around greater equality and acceptance, among other things.

In one respect, however, the Mr. Gay Germany elections differed from many other competitions of this kind: they were not broadcast on TV. That's exactly what the streaming platform Joyn now wants to change.

How does the search for the new Mr. Gay Germany actually work? Who takes part? And how is such an event organized?

Questions like these will be answered on Joyn from December 16, 2022. That's when the reality documentary "G-A-Y: Mr. Gay Germany" starts. There will be a new episode every Friday. The winner of the competition will then represent Germany at the end of next year in the election for Mr. Gay World.

A total of ten parts of "G-A-Y: Mr. Gay Germany" will be broadcast. The 12 finalists competing for the title will be accompanied by the camera over a period of three weeks. Meanwhile, they live in a villa in Spain. And to make things a little more varied for viewers, the participants take on various challenges as part of the documentary. However, it's not just about having fun, but also about making positive changes for the community. The candidates work out concepts on how the situation for the LGBTQIA+ community - both politically and socially - can be improved.

To whom does Max Appenroth pass on his title?

Max Appenroth can still enjoy the title of Mr. Gay Germany. He managed to convince the jury of his merits last time. However, the fact that he was allowed to participate at all is thanks to the fact that the Mr. Gay World association was able to agree on a change in the conditions of participation for the election.

At that time, it was determined that gay transsexual men would also be allowed to compete for the title. Now it remains to be seen to whom he will pass on the title of Mr. Gay Germany.
