Munich may keep its same-sex traffic light men

Good news for the queer scene in Munich! According to a court ruling, the Bavarian capital is allowed to keep its queer traffic lights. Not everyone liked this. One citizen was apparently so bothered by the same-sex depictions that he filed a complaint with the administrative court.

Now, however, the sign for tolerance may remain.

Lawsuit against queer traffic lights fails

The man who had filed a lawsuit against the male traffic light couples had to accept defeat. Because: According to a ruling of the Bavarian Administrative Court, the rights of the plaintiff are not affected by the same-sex traffic light males.

Among others, many people from the world of politics have already spoken positively about the ruling. In the social networks, too, more and more people are emphasizing that Munich is now living up to its reputation as a cosmopolitan city.

A lot has happened here over the course of time. A large number of gay locations, as well as counseling services, ensure that many queers feel comfortable here and the image that many people have of "traditional Bavaria" can now be refuted.

How did the traffic lights come about in the first place?

In Munich, the same-sex traffic lights have not just been around since yesterday. The special light signs were already installed in 2015. Over time, there were even more! In total, six gay couples help road users cross the street.

And it was precisely this that the aforementioned plaintiff took issue with. He claimed that his rights had been violated and wanted the gay traffic lights to be a thing of the past. Now, however, the complaint was rejected and ... quite incidentally ... a kind of example was made. The message is clear: Munich stands for tolerance and diversity.

Accordingly, queer traffic lights should not be a problem either - at least not for the majority of the population.

The task of the traffic lights is, among other things, to make people a little more aware and alert them to the diversity within the city. And that's exactly what seems to have worked. The only difference is that some are happy about this kind of statement and others are not. The latter even consider it necessary to consult the courts to find out whether so much tolerance can be legal at all.

Signs of more diversity in everyday life: Munich is not alone

Munich is definitely not the only city that is focusing on more diversity in connection with its cityscape. Among other places, things are also colorful in the truest sense of the word in Dortmund - more precisely: in Westfalen Park. Here, for example, there is a rainbow crosswalk, which here fulfills more of a symbolic meaning than actually regulating traffic.

Unfortunately, however, there are also many people who are so disturbed by such symbols that they not "only" consult the courts, but are also destructive.

Rainbow zebra stripes and other symbols have been repeatedly damaged in the past and painstakingly restored.

However, the decision of the court in Munich also shows that the scene can be aware of the support of politics here. For the plaintiff, his action may accordingly have been a "shot in the oven".

Now it remains to be seen whether the same-sex traffic lights will be seen in even more German cities in the future. Since winter 2022, Braunschweig, among other places, can also look forward to same-sex pedestrians holding hands at crosswalks. And "Mainhatten", Frankfurt, has also recognized that it is quite possible to let queer traffic signals show the way.
