Latest LGBTQIA+ ranking published: Which countries performed particularly well?

The queer-friendly status of Europe is examined at regular intervals. The "International Lesbian and Gay Association Europe" publishes a corresponding country report in this context. A look at it shows that there is good and not so good news... and also some surprises.
But: The old is at the same time also the new front runner. Malta made it to 1st place (once again) with an impressive 92 percent. Denmark managed to improve its position this year and climb to 2nd place. "Bronze" went to Belgium.
And where is the rest?

A look at the other rankings - A ranking with some surprises

In the current ranking of the International Lesbian and Gay Association Europe, Germany only manages to score slightly more than 50 percent. Italy is even worse off. According to the assessment of those responsible, the country only achieves 25 percent.

Among other things, the regular rankings examine how queer-friendly the individual European countries are - both within society and at the legal level. And there is still a lot to be done here in some cases.

The ranking is based on various categories, which were broken down further in detail. Among other things, the ranking is based on areas such as "equality," "family," "hate crime" and the handling of the topic of "gender.

Great Britain falls significantly in the ranking

On closer inspection, it was actually no surprise: Great Britain had to make some concessions in the rankings. Whereas it was ranked 10th last time, it now finds itself in 14th place. The reasons for this include the fact that it will probably be a while yet before so-called conversion therapies are finally banned here. In addition, a look at police reports and crime statistics also shows that homophobia is also widespread within society here.

Austria also only made it to 18th place in the ranking. Many queers who live here experience time and again that legislation around equality and tolerance has stalled a bit over time. One of the main points of attack - according to the report - is that in Austria currently still far too little is done against homophobic attacks.

Of course, Germany's better position in the ranking should not hide the fact that there is still work to be done here. Many queer people say they are afraid to hold hands on the street and to stand up for themselves and their sexual orientation.

Statistics and Co. - Why do you actually need numbers?

For some it is just numbers, for others it is an alarming sign. Because: Even if many people today are of the opinion that queers are "actually already equal anyway", the reality is different.
In many countries, including Germany, people who are not heterosexual, for example, are disadvantaged in various areas of everyday life. However, the report of the International Lesbian and Gay Association Europe not only deals with the individual rankings, but also gives reasons why country "XY", for example, only made it to place "XY". This also sends an important signal to politicians.

At the same time, the countries that have made improvements in this area in recent years are of course also rewarded. Among other things, Ukraine has gained ground in this year's ranking, as a lot has been done in the country with regard to the former blood donation ban for homosexuals.

Conclusion: It is worth taking a closer look every now and then to question one's own position and to find out how long the road to complete equality really still is.
