Ukrainian government advocates anti-discrimination law

The war in Ukraine is still raging. But there are always small glimmers of hope that ensure that optimism is not lost, Now the Ukrainian government has pushed for an anti-discrimination law, which should support the members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the country even better. It is particularly interesting that the law did not receive a single dissenting vote in parliament.

Many already see this as a message towards Russia, where the situation for queers is still very difficult. Among other things, because here only recently laws were enacted that further restrict the freedom of the people on the ground.

In Russia, gay people and other queers are not considered part of society. They are marginalized. This also applies to documents, pictures and art in which homosexuality plays a role. Sources like these, which deal with the topic, are considered illegal in Russia. Accordingly, it is all the more gratifying that Ukraine has made an important statement with the recent vote.

Anti-discrimination law in Ukraine

A closer look at the new Ukrainian law

Based on the new law, the situation for queer Ukrainians in the country should be improved. The content: It is forbidden to discriminate and expel people because of their sexual identity and/ or sexual orientation. Among other things, it is the fact that the new law was adopted by 299 votes to 0 that is causing joy - not only in Ukraine itself, but also internationally. Thus, many people have already spoken out on social networks to celebrate the decision.

Moreover, there are also many voices that see the vote as a sign in the direction of Europe. This is precisely what is likely to cause suspicion on the Russian side. After all, it is precisely this rapprochement that is obviously a thorn in Putin's side.

However, it is also true for Ukraine that there is still a lot of work ahead for activists. The new anti-discrimination law is one of many important steps. Many people now want it to go further and for queers, for example, to be treated equally with regard to marriage in the country and to be given the same rights as heterosexual couples. Selenski does not seem averse to this demand. He does, however, set one condition for a corresponding change in the constitution.

Same-sex marriages in Ukraine? If, then only after the war

President Volodymyr Selensky has actually left no doubt that he is positively disposed to a fundamental opening of marriage for all in his country. At the same time, however, he also emphasized that it would not be possible to amend the constitution in this respect (and to such an extent) in wartime.

Accordingly, it will probably take a little patience here until the next "big step" can be taken. But with Selenski, the queer Ukrainian community apparently has a president who will stand up for them.

By the way, the demands for marriage for all in Ukraine are not new. For a long time now, many members of the community have wanted to finally be treated equally with heterosexuals by the law.
