Hello Dr. Randy, I can't tolerate lubricant (Simon, 32 years)

As already mentioned in the headline, I do not tolerate lubricant gel. After sex with the gel I almost always suffer from pustules and itching. Surely you can imagine that so also the desire for eroticism dwindles although I'm only 32 years young.

Meanwhile, I always have the consequences in the back of my mind when I have sex, knowing that I will most likely be "out of order" in that regard for a few days.

But: I can not or do not want to do without the gel completely, because my boyfriend is so well equipped that the whole thing is unpleasant or painful. In short, I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to enjoy sex again. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for a tip, Simon

Alternative for lubricant gel

Dear Simon,

Your problem is not uncommon. There are many men who can't tolerate lube - even though manufacturers now place great emphasis on ensuring that their products do not cause skin irritations and the like.

The good news is that there are actually alternatives that are worth trying. Among other things, you can try replacing the lubricant with Vaseline, baby or massage oil, olive oil or intimate cream. These alternatives are usually well tolerated and still provide the typical "glide"effect.

However, the use of perfumed creams is not recommended. Since minor injuries can also occur from time to time during anal sex, the perfume or alcohol contained would lead to an unpleasant burning sensation.

It's best to try out together with your boyfriend which solutions you can be most enthusiastic about. If you do not need too much lubrication, you can of course also try to help with a little spit.

Another idea: of course, you can simply try a different lubricant gel in the first step! The number of manufacturers and products flooding the market in this area is large. Maybe you tolerate another brand better? It might be worth a try, right?

In general, however, it is not a good idea to "experiment" with any "home remedies". For example, you should never use substitutes that may cause the surface of the rubber to become brittle.

Otherwise, however, it is always gratifying for many men (and of course for women as well) to see that they do not have to rely on classic lubricant.

And one last tip: if you should suffer from redness, itching, etc. in this area again in the future, it is indeed - as you have already indicated - the right decision to take a sex break for a few days. After all, the skin has to calm down first. However, I am very confident that you will find a solution in the alternatives mentioned that will bring you back the fun of sex.

Perhaps your attending physician has an idea? Of course, you can also contact him if it turns out that you cannot achieve any success with the above tips. Of course, you should also contact him in the first step, if the already existing rash does not improve.

I wish you all the best!
Your Dr. Randy

  1. Hello,
I also have the problem with the lubricant allergy and if you can pop without a condom, try it with fisting agent like crisco (butter) as an alternative my tip:

X Lube - Powder lubricant: water-based, long-lasting and very economical
    Brand: X Lube
I don't want to advertise it, but when I combine the two together, I have a great and long-lasting lubrication feeling.
