Vincenzo Spadafora gave his outing on TV

Vincenzo Spadafora held the office of Italian Minister of Sport until recently. Now he has come out on TV, in a late night show. The reason he gave for this was particularly touching. Actually, he was or is known to a large part of the Italian population because of his activities in the Five Star Movement party. Here he usually struck populist and EU-critical notes.

The fact that he outed himself publicly in this way also had - according to his own statement - something to do with responsibility. And once again it became clear that politicians are only human.

And precisely BECAUSE he occupied the office of Minister and BECAUSE he was active in Italian politics for a long period of time, he apparently felt it almost his duty to take this coming out route.

Vincenzo Spadafora comes out as gay

Vincenzo Spadafora has long supported the community

Vincenzo Spadafora's commitment to the community is nothing new. On the contrary! If you take a little time to look at his resume, you will quickly realize that he has been fighting for queer rights for a long time. One of his most recent endeavors was to ensure that crimes directed at members of the LGBTQI+ community were classified as hate crimes.

And even if this plan ultimately failed, many Italians in particular still remember how vehemently Vincenzo Spadafora fought and how important it seemed to him to show a clear line.

Vincenzo Spadafora comes out as gay

Even if the community can be sure of Vincenzo Spadafora's support for a long time, surely few would have thought until now that he former minister could be gay himself. But: that is exactly the case.

Actually, he was a guest on the talk show "Che Tempo Che Fa" to talk about his new book, or more precisely, his autobiography "Unreserved".

As he approaches his coming out, the situation suddenly becomes very emotional. Spadafora explains that he believes "private" should remain private. However, if you are a public figure, you also have more responsibility. According to the PinkNews site, the Italian is concerned with standing up for those who, even today, have to fight for their rights every day. In contrast to these people, however, he has - due to his existence as a "public figure" - more possibilities.

Particularly exciting: Spadafora is Catholic. He also refers to this by explaining that he wants to show that it is by no means a contradiction to be a believer or Catholic and gay. Furthermore, he is bothered by the fact that the word "gay" is still often used as a swear word in Italy. Also against this he would like to defend himself. The ex-politician is rather of the opinion that people should not be judged by their sexual orientation, but rather by what they do or what they have achieved.

Opinions about Spadafora's outing are mixed. The community celebrates the politician for his special commitment. However, there are also some conservative voices who have nothing to do with this kind of outing - or perhaps with the topic of "homosexuality" in general. What struck some as particularly positive, however, was that the appearance on the late-night show was obviously about more than "just" a book presentation.
