Ricky Martin was more often the victim of homophobic reactions to his Instagram pictures

Ricky Martin against homophobia

Many queers know that life - among others in social networks - is not always as colorful as the rainbow. Negative reactions to a picture of two men kissing have (unfortunately) become almost "normal" for many.

One person who does not want to make friends with this idea at all is singer Ricky Martin. He, who struggled a lot with his coming out a few years ago and even deliberately made negative comments about gay men so as not to be "under suspicion" himself, is currently defending himself against homophobic haters on the Internet.

Not without reason. After all, he too has already been the victim of cyber bullying after posting pictures of himself and his husband.

Ricky Martin loses followers - because of couple pic

It sounds unbelievable, but it actually seems to show how intolerant many people have become.

Ricky Martin recently posted a picture of himself and his husband. He certainly didn't expect the reactions that came with it. Many users immediately unfollowed him, others left negative comments. This is exactly what the singer did not want to let stand. He went on the offensive and publicly drew attention to the problem on Instagram - among other things because he had already experienced in the past in the context of his coming out how painful it can be to be bullied and insulted because of his sexual orientation.

But which images were at issue? Were they "offensive"? Not at all. Rather, they were taken by a professional photographer. The subject? Two men who love and embrace each other.

Ricky Martin seems more liberated since his outing

Before Ricky Martin officially came out, rumors kept making the rounds that he was gay. At some point the pressure became too much and he decided to go public. In subsequent interviews, he repeatedly emphasized that he could now enjoy being himself without having to hide.

When a person who has had these experiences is confronted with homophobia, it can certainly open up old wounds. However, it is all the more important not to let it get you down and - as the singer demonstrates - to deal openly with the subject matter.

At the same time, the Puerto Rican not only stands up for himself and his identity, but also for the rest of the LGBTQ community. His goal is to support and encourage other people who are also confronted with homophobia online. He writes that there are "millions of people" who "suffer from a lack of acceptance every day."

After coming out, Martin now manages to deal openly and confidently with his homosexuality. He married his husband more than three years ago. The two have four children. Two twins, a two-year-old daughter and a few-month-old son.

A wonderful rainbow family that shouldn't have to worry about hate postings and the like.

Why did Ricky Martin come out so late?

As already mentioned: Rumors that Ricky Martin could be gay, there were early. However, time and again - including in interviews - the singer denied loving men. In retrospect, he explains that his actions had a very specific reason: There were people in his environment who advised him against an outing. His career would be destroyed.

Accordingly, it was ultimately his own insecurity that caused him to remain silent. However, when he then looked at his biography and saw one of his children growing up, he realized how important it was to stand by oneself.

His career was not really harmed by the step he took at that time. On the contrary! Many of his fans reacted at the time with a cool "Oh, we all knew that before!".
