Homosexual victims of National Socialism to be commemorated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

On 09 November - as in many other parts of the country - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania commemorated the victims of the Nazis and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Here, however, the establishment of a special memorial was announced. This is to commemorate the homosexual victims of the Nazi regime.

A memorial for Nazi victims

November 09 - a historic date for Germany

In historical terms, November 9 is a date for Germany that has both positive and negative connotations. On the one hand: the fall of the Berlin Wall. On the other hand: the Night of Broken Glass. Two events that could not be more different. Every year on this day, politicians come together to make a statement and to point out again and again that the terrible events during the Nazi era, for which this day stands, must never be repeated. At the same time, November 9 also shows that a country that was originally divided has been able to come closer and closer together over time.

Minister President Manuela Schwesig and Simone Oldenburg announce various LGBTQI+ projects

A few days ago, there was not only talk about coalition agreements in general. The community might have been very happy to hear that the coalition agreement also states that some LGBTQI+ projects will be realized in the future. Among other things, rainbow families should also benefit from this. They are to be supported even more.

Or, to put it another way, on the basis of the relevant amendments, families with same-sex parents are to become increasingly equal both legally and socially. Another focus in this context is the "State Action Plan for Equality and Acceptance of Sexual and Gender Diversity". No question: there is a lot to do. However, the fact that the corresponding key points have made it into the aforementioned coalition agreement shows the direction in which the joint work will go in the future.

A Memorial to the Victims of National Socialist Persecution in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

During the National Socialist era, a number of people were persecuted, among other things because of their sexual orientation. And even if it is simply not possible to make up for these cruel deeds, more and more politicians and parties are committed to erecting monuments in public spaces to commemorate the victims.

One of the youngest monuments of this kind is located in Düsseldorf. In the future, however, such an important memorial of this kind could also stand in Meck.-Pomm. Stand. Accordingly, the coalition partners want to ensure that the region gets a place of remembrance.

In memory of queer victims of violence....

The very fact that even in today's modern age many queers simply do not feel safe shows how important it is to keep reminding people that homophobia is not a "thought construct" or anything like that, but a real threat to those affected.

Shockingly, however, the current treatment of memorials shows again and again how much hatred is still directed against queers in the 21st century. Some monuments are destroyed shortly after they were erected. The perpetrators are often difficult to identify.

This makes it all the more important not to tire of setting an example time and again. It remains to be seen when the memorial will be erected and inaugurated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. However, the focus of the coalition parties should be very clear - especially in connection with the realization of the project.
