In Chile from now on also gay weddings are celebrated
A few days ago, the first same-sex couples got married in Chile. The law no longer stands in the way of the lovers. Because: Now it is officially allowed to live and celebrate gay marriages.
The first two lovers who decided to take this step go by the names of Jaime Nazar and Javier Silva. They stopped by the registry office in Santiago de Chile to tie the knot. Both could not suppress their emotions... Among other things, perhaps because they realized for themselves that they were just celebrating the beginning of a new era for the community in the country?
From the "yes" word to the interview
The wedding ceremony was simple and beautiful. The children of the couple were also present. Following the word of yes, the lovers were greeted directly by a radio station. Here they could then give further vent to their emotions at the microphone. They declared that they were proud to have finally married.
At the same time, they did not lose sight of the "big picture" and emphasized that the relevant opportunities were a big step for the country's entire LGBTQI+ community.
By the way, their wedding ceremony was by no means a quick fix. The two have been living together as a couple for several years. The "yes" word can accordingly be seen as a kind of "icing onthe cake".
Also a lesbian couple said yes to each other
Not only Jaime Nazar and Javier Silva, but also Consuelo Morales Aros and Pabla Heuser Amaya got married on this day. Both have been together even more than twice as long as Jaime and Javier, with 16 years of relationship. The two women also have a child together and, according to an interview they gave to the BBC, connect with the wedding not only a confirmation of their love to the outside world, but also legal improvements. Because: Until now, only the woman was considered the legal mother of the child, who was also the biological mother. This is exactly what has now changed with the marriage. Now both are officially mothers.
Same-sex marriage: a long road to success in Chile
The community has long advocated for same-sex marriage in Chile. Until now(for about seven years), it was only possible to register civil partnerships here. However, in many areas these did not offer the same legal basis as classic marriage.
In December of last year, the time finally came. Under President Sebastian Piñera, a law was passed that would change the lives of many queer people. Excitingly, comparatively few had expected such a political change of heart. Accordingly, the responsible decision-makers had to deal with a lot of headwind. However, this does not change the fact that - despite protests from conservative circles - the whole thing is now in the bag. Chile thus joins the ranks of countries in South America that are far more tolerant of same-sex love than many other countries on the continent.
Possibly Chile can now take on a kind of "pioneering position"? After all, the responsible politicians have already proven that changes of course, even when they are not expected, are quite possible.
Due to the enthusiasm that many queers in the country felt after the announcement of the new law, it can be assumed that there will be many more marriage ceremonies in Chile in the future.
