Sex ... This was precisely the question recently posed by the editors of Lust Mag. The aim of a survey was to determine how open, tolerant and sexually diverse the world's cities are. Among others, two German cities also managed to secure a place comparatively far in front.
The list could also provide information about which cities queers feel particularly comfortable in. Even though there are of course always exceptions, the list shows a clear tendency.
Which German cities are considered particularly "sex-friendly"?
Particularly pleasing: places 2 and 3 in the Sex Ranking are occupied by two German cities. Cologne was able to secure 2nd place and the capital Berlin 3rd place. This result is not really surprising. Both metropolises have long been known for an open LGBTQI+ community, many offers and tolerant people.
The CSDs that are held here are legendary and ensure that many people travel from all over the world to experience this special atmosphere.
Only the global metropolis of New York has managed to secure one or two places further ahead. Here, the overall situation is apparently considered to be a little more liberal. Madrid, Los Angeles and San Francisco follow in 4th, 5th and 6th place.
It remains to be seen whether listings like these will change the vacation behavior of the community, among other things. What is certain is that there are more and more references to "queer-friendly countries" in the area of tourism and that more and more members of the community attach importance to being able to move around the vacation destination without being confronted with hostility.
Who or what determines which city can convince in the ranking?
Of course, the ranking about the most sexually open and tolerant cities is not determined by the building feeling, but is based on a standardized scheme.
This means that a total of 14 different criteria were established to determine how open the cities in question are. Both legal and social details played an important role here. Another point: the consistency of positive developments.
Among other things, relevant offers, such as sex stores and the like, were also taken into account in the course of the evaluation. After all, it speaks for the openness and tolerance of a city when people have the opportunity to be sexually inspired here.
Another important question: how do cities deal with the issue ofdiscrimination against queers? Are there offers of help or are those affected largely left to their own devices? All these factors (and many more) played an important role for the authors of the study.
A clear tendency for sex
If you take a little time for sex to take a closer look at the list of cities that made it to the top spots, you'll quickly notice that (Western) European and (North) American cities are primarily represented here.
This is partly due to the fact that many countries from other parts of the world hold far fewer LGBTQI+ events, such as CSDs and the like. However, this is precisely what the creators of the ranking considered to be one of the clearest signs of an open society. After all, these are events that can greatly increase the visibility of queers in the country in question.
It remains to be seen whether cities that are not listed in the current ranking, or are listed further down the list, will take the opportunity to "rework" their ranking. What is certain is that it is always interesting to look at current developments (and a possible change in the position of cities in the list).
