ZDF will soon be showing a series with a non-binary character

ZDF launches a non-binary series

ZDF's programming could become a little queerer in the future. Because: The station is currently working on a series in which much revolves around a non-binary character. A total of six parts are planned. The main character, Charlie, doesn't feel like a man and doesn't feel like a woman... And that should speak to the hearts of many queers right now. Filming will take place in the Hessian city of Offenbach.

The new series on ZDF - what is known?

There are already some details that arouse curiosity. The series is to run under the working title "Charlie" and consist of a total of six parts. Charlie is a non-binary teen who is on a quest to find himself. One episode is supposed to last about 15 minutes.

The idea was born during the Corona pandemic. In addition to being available via the ZDF Mediathek, "Charlie" will then also be viewable on ZDF neo.

The lead role is played by Lea Drinda. Many may still know her from the remake of "Wie Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo". However, not too much is known about Charlie yet. She is said to be in her early twenties and feels neither a woman nor a man. She lives in rather weak social circumstances and shares an apartment with her mother.

Both Charlie and her mother are not in control of their lives. They keep taking on new jobs. In all the confusion, Charlie finally realizes that she is not living up to the expectations that her environment has of her. She doesn't really feel like she belongs anywhere - neither with her male nor with her female acquaintances. The question of where Charlie belongs drives her throughout the series.

Filming for the series is currently still in progress. It is expected to be completed by mid-February. There is no exact start date for the broadcast yet.

How important is queer visibility on TV, anyway?

When it comes to queer visibility on TV, many private stations in particular have done a lot of groundwork recently. Prince Charming and Princess Charming, among others, have enjoyed particular popularity. Now, the public broadcasters are apparently following suit and focusing more and more on the topic.

While "back then" an outcry went through the masses when, for example, Carsten Flöter outed himself in "Lindenstraße" and kissed a man in the early evening program, many people are more relaxed about the subject nowadays. However, society has also changed in other respects. Because: In the meantime, the focus is no longer "only" on gay and lesbian people, but also on people who, for example, see themselves as non-binary.

The fact that there is just now a series that deals with exactly this could, among other things, give strength especially to young people who - just like Charlie - do not know where they belong.

The very fact that "non-binary" has now become a word in common usage that expresses what so many affected people feel has ensured that many people can now better identify with themselves and their orientation. Now that the topic is more and more in the focus, it is perhaps a little easier for many affected people to recognize for themselves that they - exactly AS they are - are absolutely "okay" and that numerous people feel the same way as they do.
