"Be kind" campaign advocates peaceful coexistence

Many people on the Reeperbahn are campaigning for a new campaign. The motto is "Be kind. And, strictly speaking, it doesn't take much imagination to figure out what the basic message behind this is.

No question: The Reeperbahn is colorful and exuberant. And that there is more partying here than in other places in Germany is also clear to many. But: From now on, another point is a little more in focus: being loved. This is exactly the opinion of the neighborhood management BID Reeperbahn.

Anyone who has ever visited the Reeperbahn in Hamburg knows that things are colorful here in many ways. The most diverse types of people meet here. They not only party, but also work and live together. For precisely that to work, it is all the more important to be respectful of others. And perhaps the "Be Lovely" campaign will remind one or two people that basic values must be observed even in a particularly boisterous environment.

Why was the "Be Lovely" campaign created in the first place?

The fact that the "Be Lovely" campaign was launched is actually based on a sad occasion. Because: If you take a closer look at the statistics, you will unfortunately find that the number of homophobic, sexual and racist assaults has increased significantly in recent times. Many queers, among others on the Reeperbahn, but also elsewhere, often no longer dare, for example, to show their love for their partner in public.

This is precisely what the supporters of the campaign on the Reeperbahn now want to counteract. The goal: Everyone should feel comfortable on the mile... and accordingly safe. To attract more attention, several posters with a reference to the campaign have already been distributed. In total, more than 50 people have already taken part in the photo campaign for "Being Lovely". And: The concerns are being presented internationally. Some posters are in German, others in Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Arabic and English. And to make sure that everyone knows exactly what the campaign is about, the words "No Racism, No Homophobia and No Sexism" were added.

The message behind the campaign

Hamburg's Reeperbahn has always been considered a place to go for all those who feel like experiencing something. Here is flirted, celebrated and often also created the basis for one or the other hot night.

Unfortunately, however, the police are also recording more and more crimes here, some of which are also homophobically motivated. The message behind the "Be Lovely" campaign is unmistakable: anyone who is not lovely is not welcome on the Reeperbahn.

The statement is particularly authentic, among other things, because it is supported by so many well-known faces of the Reeperbahn. Among others, the founder of the Sex-Toy-Museum "L'Apotheque" also stands up for more tolerance on the "hot mile". And many others who have come to know and love the Reeperbahn do not miss the opportunity to carry this important message into the world.

What is the Reeperbahn?

When you think of Hamburg's entertainment district, you think of the Reeperbahn. But: There is much more here than just red light. Visitors from all over the world are often interested in drifting, visiting the bars and pubs and simply enjoying a very special flair.

Due to rising crime, a ban on weapons was imposed on the Reeperbahn in 2007. Shortly thereafter, glass bottles were also banned in the area. Unfortunately, the measures did not really have much effect.

The "Be Lovely" campaign takes a different approach, but undoubtedly has the same goal.
