The results of the poll, which looks at whether trans people should get more rights, are in... And may startle some.

Because: More than 52 percent of the respondents have stated that they think that transsexuals have enough rights. Some even go one step further. In their view, queers even have too many freedoms.

The study of Trans Rights in detail

The study, which shows how many people think about the topic "More rights for trans people", was conducted by YouGov. A total of exactly 1,009 people took part in the survey. The answers could be given - quite conveniently - online.

All participants were 18 years and older. Overall, it was noticeable that male respondents were significantly more skeptical about the field of transsexuality than women. They were far more likely to think that transsexuals had too many rights. However, it is also worthwhile to dive a little deeper into the matter. Because: Of course the survey did not only ask for classical "yes" and "no" answers. The choices were much more versatile.

What are the results of the study?

According to the study, 20 percent of people in Germany think that transsexual people have too many rights. Broken down by gender, it shows that about 25 percent of men and "only" 15 percent of women are of this opinion.

More than 30 percent feel that the current status quo is suitable. They would like neither more nor fewer rights for trans people. However, just under 30 percent still see a need for action. Again, it is more women who vote to give trans people even more rights. 20 percent made no statement.

More than half of the respondents feel it is okay for a person to identify with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. Once again, there is an extreme difference between the responses of male and female respondents. For almost 70 percent of women it is acceptable to be transsexual. On the male side, only 55 percent are acceptable.

It is certainly difficult to discuss what this is due to. In the past, however, there have been repeated studies dealing with the different reactions to lesbian women and gay men. Even here, it was shown that gay men or trans women are more often hostile than lesbian women.

Maybe the - partly strongly diverging - views can be explained by the fact that the combination "man" and "same-sex love" is still a thorn in the side for many people?

Especially important: increased visibility

Transsexuals all over the world do not stop fighting for their rights - both on the streets and in online CSDs. That exactly this is still important is shown by survey results like the ones mentioned above.

Most members of the scene keep explaining that it would definitely be wrong to talk about complete equality, despite "marriage for all" and co. The good news, however, is that in the meantime many representatives of the federal government have also put their focus on this important issue.

It only remains to hope that all rights that are granted to transsexuals or queers in general on paper in the future will also manifest in the minds of the people and accordingly be lived socially. However, the current survey result unfortunately shows that Germany is probably still a little further away from this than perhaps suspected.
