Some people criticize the diversity parking spaces in Hanau

The recently inaugurated diversity parking spaces are now the subject of heated debate. Now, among others, the Hanau City Council has already spoken out and stated that this would by no means be exclusively parking spaces for members of the community, but parking spaces for everyone.

The "colorful" parking spaces are located largely centrally in Hanau in the underground car park "Am Markt". From here it is not far to the popular shopping facilities of the city.

The "diversity parking spaces" in Hanau

Partly unobjective criticism

It was certainly clear to those involved from the very beginning that not everyone would be comfortable with the idea of "rainbow parking spaces". The prejudice quickly made the rounds, especially in the social networks, that the diversity parking spaces were exclusively parking spaces for queers.

Also in the context of an interview with the DPA, the city councilor recently made it clear that the criticism voiced about the parking spaces was by no means factual. Among other things, he speaks of "homophobic and xenophobic reactions".

Anyone reading this who thinks that a complete parking deck has been made available to those in search of a little more protection in everyday life is mistaken. We are talking about a total of three parking spaces that are monitored by video and are located comparatively close, similar to typical women's parking spaces, to the exit of the parking garage.

A misunderstanding with greater consequences

Due to the assumption that only queers and migrants were actually allowed to park in the "colored areas", other groups of people - obviously - felt strongly disadvantaged.

In this context, however, the responsible city councilor, Thomas Morlock, now clarified that the aim is not to reserve parking spaces for a specific group of people, but rather to support tolerance and versatility with the appropriate markings.

Who is allowed to park in the event parking lots?

Actually, there is only one answer to this question: all those who feel the need for a little extra protection are allowed to park in the diversity parking spaces in Hanau - and this is completely independent of gender, sexual orientation or nationality.

In addition, the city explained that anyone who wanted to make a statement against hate and exclusion could park their car here.

In short, anyone who looks a little deeper into the discussion surrounding the parking spaces and the city's statement should quickly realize that this is in no way about taking away anyone's parking spaces.

However, proximity to the exit combined with video surveillance can also help prevent violence against minorities. After all, this is a concept that has already seen success in other areas.

Criticism of "too much concession."

Among others, it is mainly people from the right-wing milieu who, in connection with statements such as these, repeatedly accuse that the corresponding actions would only fuel hatred against diversity and co. Therefore, they speak out against making queerness, diversity and the desire for more equality loud or visible again and again.

However, as long as people think that three colorful parking spaces would provide reasons to make racist and/ or homophobic statements, it can certainly be clearly stated that there is still a lot to be done in terms of harmonious coexistence and tolerance.

Let's hope that the mentioned parking areas, precisely because of their message, will be preserved for a long time and that they will not be damaged.
